Self-Development of People announces

2006 award recipients

Congratulations to:

The Self-Development of People Committee of the Synod of the Trinity is pleased to award monetary grants to these 4 hard working and promising self-development projects.  Each proposal is full of promise and the committee is excited to become partners with each project as it progresses towards the goal of becoming self-sustaining.  A short synopsis on each project is available below.

Official Internet Black News Network
Pittsburgh, PA
Reporting from the street

The Official Internet Black News Network is the development of a black internet news broadcast and website for the Pittsburgh area which will detail all information accessible to inform the black community of the world around them.  It effects long term change both for the members in the community of need and for the surrounding community that it serves and provides group members with self-sufficiency, exposure in working in a group setting aimed at a goal, and experience in owning and running a viable enterprise and networking with other businesses, organizations, and individuals that aspire to see a positive change in the community. This is the second year that SDOP has awarded funds to OIBNN.

Peer to Peer
Pittsburgh, PA

Peer to Peer is a luncheonette owned and operated by a group of disadvantaged senior citizens in Pittsburgh which will provide a good meal in a safe place and income for programs for their group and in turn, be an asset to the community.  The long term goals are to sustain the project through partnerships with government and private foundations until a customer base is created to provide for a successful business.  The Peer to Peer group came together collectively to overcome obstacles facing senior citizens.  Composed of pre-civil rights Afro-Americans, many in the group are the last in their families and rely on each other for support and guidance.  This is a brand new project and was awarded funds from SDOP for the first time in 2006.

Stargazers
Pittsburgh, PA

Stargazers is a group of struggling artists who created their organization because individually they were not able to break into the music business due to lack of money for agents and record deals.  Their mutual desire to succeed and excel in business prompted them to collaborate and form Stargazers which:

shapes and molds creative ideas and works of art into reproducible forms - movies, short stories, documentaries, education& training pieces, PSAs, commercials, infomercial's, etc.
affixes artwork to permanent and re-usable media - cds, dds, video, film, etc
duplicates and packages products for distribution and sale
provides marketing services to the community of need
provides marketing services as a work-for-hire for larger community

Stargazers is intended to help artists manage their own careers without being exploited by other larger entities and as a group, support and assist each other in the business world.  This is the first grant that SDOP has given to Stargazers.

Women in Pursuit of Healing
Pittsburgh, PA

This project, Women in Pursuit of Healing, works with and trains a group of African-American women in recovery from drugs and alcohol so they can organize and co-facilitate a women's discussion group.  It provides a support group that shares experiences, struggles, and triumphs with others in the same situation and teaches facilitation skills to run their own groups and to move forward economically.  Each participant signs a commitment pledge that binds her to finish the project. A facilitator was hired to teach the training to the women and fundraising acclivities were undertaken to financially provide for this project.  Pre-testing, skill assessment and post-testing are all included in this project.  SDOP is proud to support Women in Pursuit of Healing for the first time.
