|
| The Synod of the Trinity expresses shock and sadness on receiving the tragic news of the murder on June 19 of the Rev. Mark A. McCalla, 48, pastor of Highlawn Presbyterian Church, 2814 Collis Avenue, Huntington, WV. A state forestry official found his body Thursday morning at the Beech Fork State Park rifle range where Mark, an avid outdoorsman, had gone for target practice. Investigators believe McCalla died from a single gunshot wound to the head. West Virginia State Police, Huntington Police Department and the National Guard are participating in the investigation. |
|
Mark had served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Corry, PA and the First Presbyterian Church in Franklin, PA. He moved to Highlawn after serving as a designated pastor at Hoge Memorial in Columbus, OH, for two years.
Mark’s wife, Rev. Pam McCalla, served in Lake Erie Presbytery as co-pastor with Mark in Corry and Franklin and she also served as Moderator of Lake Erie Presbytery. Currently Pam is stated supply pastor at Eleanor (WV) Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 23rd at his church in Huntingdon, West Virginia. "Mark is truly in all of his glory and life," said the Rev. Mike Ducheneau, who led the service. The singing of "Jesus loves me," the Bible's assurance that nothing "shall be able to separate us from the love of God," and a speaker's request to "redeem our memories and renew our confidence in the goodness of God" characterized the sense of loss and lack of understanding as mourners grappled with the sudden death of Rev. McCalla.

| Mark is survived by his wife; sons, Benjamin and Samuel; stepchildren, Alan Eargle of Lexington, and Lauren Eargle; his parents, Paul A. and Charlotte L. McCalla of Columbus, Ohio; sisters, Melinda Vasila (Thomas), of Columbus and Jodie Huge (Terry) of Cincinnati; along with many other close family members and friends. |
| Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington, 1101 6th Avenue, Huntington, WV 25701. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.chapmans-mortuary.com. Messages of support may be sent to Pam at 122 Harrison Court, Huntington, West Virginia 25702. |
