The Rhythm of the Synod
Faith Notes
Winter 2005 Conference Meeting
Feb. 24-25, 2005
Laurelville Mennonite Center, PA

The Synod of the Trinity of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

During the first meeting of the 288th year of the Synod of the Trinity, Commissioners were introduced to the Rev. Dr. Curtis Jones who is serving as a consultant for Racial Ethnic Ministries for the Synod.  Dr. Jones has been working with many of the Synod’s pastors and congregations assisting them in developing a missional emphasis in their Christian work and witness.

Elder Jean Kennedy (Pittsburgh Presbytery) was installed as Synod Moderator and the Rev. Ed Gray (Washington Presbytery) was installed as Vice-Moderator for 2005.  Gratitude was expressed to the Rev. Keith Conover (Redstone Presbytery) and Elder Ruth Rusling (Lehigh Presbytery) for their leadership in the past year.  (Located under Synod Leadership is a short bio on Jean and Ed)

Commissioners recognized the Network for Adults with Disabilities and the Trinity Youth Conference Network as two new Mission Networks within the Synod.  New Church Development support was given to Word Centered Fellowship (Shenango Presbytery) and The Open Door (Pittsburgh Presbytery).

The Personnel Committee presented the new Employee Handbook and Code of Conduct for Synod employees.  Approval was given for the use of these two documents.

Commissioners considered the implications of living out the new Synod structure by addressing a variety of emerging issues.  It was decided that Network funds will be handled by a governing body of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) - this could be the Synod, a Presbytery, or a church. These governing bodies can also contract for services on behalf of the Networks, as long as the Networks pays for these services.  It was decided that Synod Commissioners may be active participants in Mission Networks.

Due to the many relief efforts being coordinated by Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA), Commissioners voted to send PDA $5,000 to assist in this important work.

The Summer Conference Meeting will be held June 27 - July 1, 2005 at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania.  The business portion of the Synod meeting will be convened on the morning of Thursday, June 30.

Respectfully submitted,
The Rev. Lesley Imler Shoup
Stated Clerk
