Friends in Christ:
We are aware that some actions of the 217th General Assembly, while all made with careful consideration and a strong desire for faithfulness, may be highly controversial. We encourage you to seek the most accurate information regarding those actions and to prayerfully consider the most helpful ways you can express your concerns. The leadership of the Synod is committed to assisting and resourcing presbyteries as they work through sorting out these issues.

Elected on Thursday, June 15,2006 was the Moderator of the 217th General Assembly, Joan Gray, a minister in the Greater Atlanta Presbytery. Elder Robert Wilson of North Alabama Presbytery was elected vice-moderator. General Assembly paused for a moment to recognize and thank the presbyteries that in 2005 gave the most unrestricted funds — officially termed “basic mission support” — to General Assembly mission. Among the top ten were 4 of our Presbyteries: Carlisle, Donegal, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. Congratulations! For reports and photos, click on General Assembly's website under News and Photos.

The main speaker was the Rev. Graham Standish. The Rev. Eugenia Gamble was the conference pastor and Mr. Bruce Smith was the conference worship music director. |

Eugenia Gamble |
Meeting on the campus of our Synod-related college in West Virginia,
Davis & Elkins College, participants enjoyed worship services, presentations, group discussions, and a concert of Appalachian music with John Lilly.
Special times with Graham Standish and Eugenia Gamble were made available for anyone who wished to have a conversation with them. There were meetings of Synod committees and Synod Mission Networks, as well as displays provided by various groups from within the Synod. |
Conference Co-Chairpersons, Alan Adams, General Presbyter of Beaver-Butler Presbytery, and Karen Robinson, Synod Commissioner and staff member of West Virginia Presbytery, led a planning team that developed the conference. The team members were pleased to see 160 registered persons enjoying the event which was inspired by Graham Standish’s book, Becoming a Blessed Church. |
At the Synod business meeting, Commissioners heard reports from our seven Mission Networks. Commissioners approved the recognition of a new Network called the Synod of the Trinity Korean Presbyterian Network. This new Network has been endorsed by the Presbyteries of Northumberland and Philadelphia. It was announced that at least two other Networks are in the process of forming. |
| Also at the business meeting, Synod’s portion of per capita was set at $2.00. It was noted that this is the same per capita amount as last year. |
Synod Moderator, Ruth Rusling, appointed the Co-Chairpersons for the 2007 Summer Conference: Steve Shussett, Teaching Presbyter of Lehigh Presbytery, and Shawn Zanicky, Synod Commissioner from Lackawanna Presbytery. Next summer’s Conference Meeting will be held June 13-15 on the campus of another Synod-related college, Arcadia University in Glenside, Pennsylvania, located in the Presbytery of Philadelphia.
|
The next Synod business meeting will be held October 19-20, 2006 in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania in the Presbytery of Shenango. |
| Respectfully submitted, |
| The Rev. Lesley Imler Shoup, Stated Clerk |
