Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Training
November 10-11, 2006

Mensch Mill Conference and Retreat Center

Alburtis PA

A 2 day intensive hands-on training will be held at Mensch Mill Conference and Retreat Center in Alburtis, PA on Friday & Saturday, November 10-11, 2006.  We are thrilled that National Associate, John Robinson, can represent PDA in Louisville, KY to train participants in this inter-active seminar on these dates. This training is being sponsored by Lehigh Presbytery's Helping Hands Care Team and the Synod of the Trinity.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance enables congregations and mission partners of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) to witness to the healing love of Christ through caring for communities adversely affected by crisis and catastrophic events.  Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is the emergency and refugee program of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A.  It is presupposed that Presbyterians will seek to help all disaster survivors, especially the poor, the helpless, and those without political influence, in keeping with Jesus' words as recorded in Matthew 25:40, "...just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me."

Topics that will be covered but not limited to include:

Types of Disasters

Stages of Disaster Response
How Presbyterians are organized to deal with Disasters
After a Disaster:  Community Resources
Response to Church property damage
Coordination of volunteer work teams
How can we (Church, Presbytery, Synod) get ready for possible disasters?
-
before disaster strikes
-
when disaster strikes
-
offering church facilities for emergency use
-
providing for volunteers, appeals for assistance, worship, survivors
-
working with interfaith groups
-
financial assistance

"Since Hurricane Katrina many of our churches and presbyteries have been involved in disaster relief, cleanup and rebuilding efforst. This past July disaster relief efforts came closer to home with flooding along the rivers and tributaries throughout the Synod.  How prepared are we for future catastrophic events, natural or terrorist initiated?"
