Imagine a large community of people living in poverty: no running water, electricity or sanitation, limited food, clothing and furniture, austere housing, families sleeping on mats on the dirt floor of a 12x12 block house, an average lifespan of 45 years. Most of the day is given to the survival tasks of gathering wood, fetching water in plastic containers pushed in a wheelbarrow, cooking mealy in cast iron pots on an open fire. Although this community is located on the vast continent of Africa, living here is like being stranded on a desert island for there is minimal opportunity for a better future, practically no hope for escaping or improving t he situation. The Christian pastors in this region repeatedly encourage the people to believe in Jesus and they will receive many blessings, so they praise and pray and wait…
Meanwhile, in a small country church, a spark of interest in this African community soon becomes a flame attracting many people. Interest and passion grow and as a result of the love, prayers and financial support of many, a church is built in the village of Bismark, South Africa. Americans and Africans alike see the hand of God at work and the blessings are plentiful, both tangible and intangible, and all persons involved experience spiritual growth and renewal.
One of the most defining moments of this year’s trip, a historical first, was the presence of the King of Sekororo at the church dedication ceremony. This man is extremely respected in this community of 100,000 people. He greeted the 500 people attendin g in the name of the Lord, Jesus Christ and gave his blessing and support to the church, encouraging their involvement. Later in the evening he asked for a cross to wear and was gifted with one by a team member. For more details on the work accomplished, please click on the the letter by team leader, Steve McKenzie.
The people who traveled to South Africa have returned physically tired, but spiritually exhilarated and eternally grateful to those who made this trip possible. Thank you friends and family for the vital role you played in this church-building mission and the many blessings that resulted from your outpouring of love.
Yours in Christ,
