General Assembly

The General Assembly is the highest governing body of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and it is representative of the unity of its 16 synods, 173 presbyteries, and over 11 thousand sessions and congregations.

General Assembly is comprised of an equal number of elders and ministers who are elected from their presbyteries, and they are called "commissioners."   The number of commissioners elected depends upon the number of church members in the presbytery.  Each synod has a part in the General Assembly's mission structure through the nomination and election of at least one elder or minister.  General Assembly holds a stated meeting at least biennially.

Their offices are located at 100 Witherspoon Street, Louisville, Kentucky 40202-1396.  You may contact them by calling (888) 728-7228, or visit their website.

The Theological Task Force on Peace, Unity, and Purity of the Church has released the first video in a new series of videos for the Presbyterian Church (USA).  The series is designed primarily for adults of all ages who have come together as a theological reflection group to use similar processes and to study the same issues as the task force.  Other groups - adult study groups, new member classes, office training, commissioned lay pastors - may find the series helpful to adapt for more general use.  Copies of the video have been mailed to every presbytery resource center and seminary library, as well as middle governing body executives.  Copies are available for $10 through Presbyterian Distribution Service by calling (800) 524-2612 and asking for item #OGA-03-069.  For further information, contact:  Sharon K. Youngs, Communications Coordinator, at (888) 728-7228 ext. 5750, or syoungs@ctr.pcusa.org.
