Missional Church Presentation

Bruce Stevens and Tom Robinson,

co-executives of the Synod of the Trinity, offered Commissioners at the February 2006 Synod meeting the opportunity to participate in scripture reading, a discernment process, and a discussion about what it means to be a missional Synod and the implications for our Presbyteries and local congregations.  Also presented were a few of the marks of a Missional Church and the group was given time to break into small groups to discuss the ways that the Synod can encourage and promote this concept.

Scripture: Dwelling in the Word, Luke 10:1-12
A key characteristic of missional churches is that they are communities who engage with scripture not as history or simply a story of the past, but as the beginning of their story as disciples which extends through the disciple community.  This issue isn't only what God has done but also therefore, what God is doing now.  This practice of encountering scripture, based on a modified form of Lectio Divina, seeks to engage disciples with scripture through reading and hearing the word, through prayerful reflection guided by the Holy Spirit, dialogue with a brother or sister in Christ, and with the larger community of disciples.  Click here to read The Word and to discern and reflect the implications.
Marks: Leading to a Missional Church

1. People of the church are called and sent.
2.

The church is a "contrast community" and disciples are "contrast people."

3. The church is the people and the place where other people experience the reign of God.
4. Organization and structure are the servants of the mission.
5. The church and its people practice the presence and activity of God celebrating God's providence, practicing discernment and demonstrating security.
6. The church weaves strangers into the fabric of fellowship.
7. The church sees its first purpose as announcing the Reign of God.
8. The church engages with scripture not as history, but as our story.

Bruce has created a powerpoint presentation (below) for your use and discussion as we enter a pivotal point in the life of the Presbyterian Church.  Printouts of the powerpoint presentation are available in either word or pdf form below.
