Harmonsburg PC burns |
The Harmonsburg Presbyterian Church, Harmonsburg, PA (Presbytery of Lake Erie) was totally engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene on Sunday, January 13, 2008 around 3 am. Rescued by early firefighters were the communion set, a few Bibles and a couple books. Everything else was lost as the 164 year old wood frame building burned. The intensity of the fire was so great that it burned the front off a small green storage shed in the yard behind the church and burned through the back of a sign board near the front entrance. Five fire departments were dispatched to the scene.

Rev. Bryan Powell held Sunday services at nearby Summit Volunteer Fire Department station as state police worked to determine a possible cause and origin of the fire although there wasn't much to work with. The investigation will continue. |
| "I tried to address the congregation with some thoughts about the situation and present them the hope that Christ is always with us," Powell said. "Even though our building burned, the people are the church, not the building. It was sad, but we had things to be hopeful for." |
The site of future church services remained up in the air as Powell and his 60-member congregation worked to move on from Sunday's loss. The complete story (from the Erie Times News) is available by clicking on the link below.
