First Presbyterian Church of Lackawana Valley receives PC(USA) Award |
Church receives Sam and Helen R. Dalton Award |
| First United Presbyterian Church of Lackawanna Valley, part of Lackawanna Presbytery, has been selected to receive one of the four
Sam & Helen R. Dalton awards for 2008. The Walton Awards were established in 1991 as part of a $6 million gift from the late Sam and Helen Walton — founders of Wal-Mart — through the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Foundation. Half of the gift created an endowment, the interest on which funds the awards. Sherwood Presbyterian Church (Oregon), Nuevo Amanacer Hispanic New Church Development (CA), and Mission Bay Community Church (CA) were also selected for their
innovative approach to new church ministry. Each recipient receives a $50,000 award. |
| By combining First United PC of Peckville and Calvin United PC of Olyphant, the congregations took the challenge to find a place that was barrier-free and that would allow their older members and those with disabilities to attend comfortably. A former restaurant, located in the center of the communty, was found and fundraising begun. This prestigious award will be used to adapt the space for worship, meeting space, and a new sanctuary that one day will be built on this site. Click here for complete story. |
Congratulations to First Presbyterian Church of Lackawanna Valley on receiving the Sam & Helen R. Walton Award!
