AFRICAN
AMERICAN LEADERSHIP RETREAT
The
African American Leadership Retreat was held September 26-28,
2003 at the Clarion Hotel and Convention Center in Carlisle,
Pennsylvania. The retreat's theme was "The Spirit
of the Lord is Upon Me," and the scriptural reference
was Luke 4:18.
A
total of 81 attendees participated in this weekend event.
This year there was a preacher for each day, and they each
expounded on the scriptural theme, leaving the participants
with a more clearly defined synopsis of the roles they play
as church leaders. Those preaching were: the
Rev. Jimmy Lee Stratton from Bethel Presbyterian Church
in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; the Rev. Dr. Jean Adams Daniels,
Honorably Retired, of Silver Springs, Maryland; and the
Rev. William Gaffney, Jr. from the New Covenant Presbyterian
Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The
musician again this year was the Dr. Melva W. Costen, Helmar
Emil Nielsen Professor of Worship and Music at the Interdenominational
Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Costen
led the attendees in worship throughout the weekend, and
she closed the retreat during Sunday morning worship with
a 15+ member choir.
The
following workshops were offered at this year's event:
--
"Transformational Leadership: Doing Ministry Outside
of the Box," led by the Rev.
Jermaine
McKinley, Assistant Director of the Metro-Urban Institute
at Pittsburgh
Theological
Seminary;
