Peacemaking Ministries Network awards Andrew Murray Travel Grant to group traveling to the Baltics
"You have been an answer to our prayers ....You and the Peacemaking Network have truly been a miracle come true for us!" These were the opening statements of an e-mail the network recently received from William Bauer thanking it on behalf of a mission work group from his church. He sent the e-mail in response to notice he received from the network that it had considered the proposal he submitted and awarded a travel grant of $5,100 from the Andrew E. Murray Travel Scholarship Fund. The fund awards travel grants to individuals and groups who are traveling to countries of the former Soviet Union. The purpose of the trips must include peacemaking components.
Mr. Bauer submitted an excellent, detailed proposal to the network asking for travel assistance for The Baltic Group, a mission work group of twenty people from Pine Street Presbyterian Church, Harrisburg, PA. The group is making a trip to Lithuania, Latvia, and Russia from June 21 to July 12, 2006. They will visit and worship with their sister congregation in Birzai, Lithuania. They will also construct a handicapped ramp to the sanctuary to facilitate access for elderly members of the congregation and do minor maintenance and repairs to the building.
They will also visit and work at several children's homes in Latvia and Russia. At the children's home in Latvia they will construct two additional bedrooms and frame out two bathrooms, install plumbing fixtures in the bathrooms, and install a septic tank. In Russia, they will visit at a church-operated English language school for street children, where they will worship with the family of the Presbyterian pastor who runs the school and provide funds to purchase one or two kitchen applicances for the school cafeteria.
On their return, the group plans to produce a PowerPoint presentation and serve as a speakers bureau to share their experiences with groups interested in learning about their trip and to encourage others to become involved in mission. The network has invited them to speak at its fall meeting.
